John Joseph Armstrong was born on August 18, 1848, in Illinois, United States, son of Daniel Friel Armstrong (1797–1884) and Sarah Nutter (1799–1889).
In the 1850 census, John (age 3) lived in Marshall, Clark, Illinois, United States, with his parents and six siblings.[1]
His parents moved their family from Illinois to Ringgold County, Iowa, before 1860, and he lived there for the remainder of his life. The 1860 census recorded John living in East Fork Township, Ringgold, Iowa, United States, with his parents and four siblings.[2]
John married Elsie Freeling (born on November 16, 1848) on September 9, 1869, in Ringgold, Iowa.[3] John and Elsie had at least six children, one of whom died in infancy. One of their daughters was Clemma Armstrong (~1872–~1962).
In 1870, newlyweds John and Elsie and their baby, Clyde, lived with his parents in Ringgold.[4]
In the 1880 census, John (age 31) was the married head of household in Liberty Township, Ringgold, Iowa, United States.[5]

John died in Princeton, Missouri, while visiting his daughter, Ida (Armstrong) Draper. There is a memorial for him in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, United States, with a death date of 26 October 1918.[8] The body was returned to Mount Ayr and buried next to his wife, who passed in December 1917. The memorial has a transcription of his obituary.
