Biography
Robert was born about 1755. Family lore reports this to have taken place in the north of Ireland, while the family was en route from Scotland to America. An Armstrong Ancestry, on the other hand, suggests that he was "probably" born in New York State.
His wife is known to have been named Mary. "An Armstrong Ancestry" cites an 1873 Jefferson Co, WI, marriage record for son John NMN Armstrong stating his parents' names as Robert and Mary Armstrong.
Findagrave provides Robert with a wife, Mary Starret (married 16 March 1779 in Washington County, Maryland) and 8 children that lived to adulthood, including John, Mary Olive ("Polly"), James P., Daniel, William, Samuel, Harriet, and John Wilson. There apparently were 4 children that did not survive childhood. Documentation of this information is wanted; there are a number of Robert Armstrongs and we are not certain this is the correct one.
We believe that the family was living in Dutchess County around 1788 when son John Wilson was born, due to the latter giving Dutchess County as his place of birth on the 1855 NY Census.
It seems that Robert was living in Oneida County in 1810, possibly in the area which was later to become Oswego County.
Robert was living in Mexico, Oswego Co, in 1820.[1]
Robert is believed to have passed away about 1821. [2]

Robert Armstrong family includes 1 white male over 16 (Robert), 3 white males under 16 (Samuel, James, and John Wilson, ages 0 to 7) , and 3 white females (Wife Mary and 2 unaccounted daughters?). Note that in the 1855 NY census for Hannibal, Oswego Co, John W. Armstrong, age 66, lists his place of birth as Dutchess Co.

US Census 1820, Mexico, Oswego, NY lists James P Armstrong, Robert Armstrong, and Daniel Armstrong (p 1271). Samuel Armstrong and his family are also in Mexico (p 1275); John W. is on p.1269.

- James P Armstrong (p1271): Males: 3 under 10 years of age, 1 aged 26-45. Females: 1 under 10 years of age, 1 aged 26-45.
- Daniel Armstrong (p1271): Males: 1 aged 16-26. Females: 1 aged 16-26.
