Dr. John Barclay Armstrong, Sr., was born 28 September 1783 in Surry County, North Carolina, at the height of the American Revolution. He was the son of Martin Armstrong Jr. (1739 - 1808), a colonel in the Surry County militia, and Mary Ann (Tate) Armstrong (1733 - 1792), the daughter of James Tate and Elizabeth Baxter.
Jean Bradley Anderson states in his biography of Col. Martin Armstrong Jr. (cited below) that Martin and his wife Mary Tate had five known children.
" Five of their children are known:
Thomas Temple (b. 1770), who married Mary McMurry;
Jane (b. ca. 1773), who married firstly William Hewlett and secondly John Evans; #Mary Ann Elizabeth (b. 1775), who married to Alexander McCall;
John Barclay Armstrong (b. ca. 1777); and
Joseph."
Dr. John married Nancy Mooreland Turner, the daughter of Berriman Turner and Susannah Saunders, on 24 Oct 1807 in Smith Co., Tennessee. Nancy was born on 23 March 1790 in Caswell, North Carolina. She died after 1850 in Smith Co., Tennessee.
John and Nancy (Turner) Armstrong had 11 known children:
Martin Wilson Armstrong, b. 1808, who married Mary Minerva DORAN, 1834 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. They moved to Cherokee County, Texas.
Susannah Armstrong, b.1811, who never married and moved to Texas with sister Martha.
Molly Armstrong, 1813-1831, who died young.
Thomas Temple Armstrong, b. 1816, who married Martha Washington POLLARD, 1850, in Monroe County, Mississippi, and married secondly to Mrs. Fannie D. BROWN, 1871, in Lee County, Mississippi. He died in Lee County, Mississippi in 1874.
Nancy Moreland Armstrong, b. 1817, who married Dr. Lewis Vance YOUNG, no known children.
John Barkley Armstrong Jr., b. 1819, who married Maria READY, 1842, at Rutherford County, Tennessee, and who died at McMinnville, Tennessee in 1875; father of Texas Ranger John Barclay Armstrong III.
Martha Armstrong, b. 1821, who married Thomas Clinton PEACE, 1853, at Smith County, Tennessee. They moved to Texas. Their children died in Hale County, Texas.
Berryman Turner Armstrong, b. 1823, who married Martha "Mattie" LAGRONE, 1858, in Monroe County, Mississipi.
Joseph William Armstrong, b. 1825, who married Missouri HOWARD about 1857, probably in Missouri, and who died about 1860 in St. Louis)
Robert Jackson ARMSTRONG, b. 1828, who never married. He died in Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War.
David Hosack Armstrong, b. 1831, who married Julia Francis McALLISTER in Grayson County / Cooke County, Texas in 1859). Hed died 3 September 1904, Austin, Travis Co., TX.
Dr. John B. Armstrong Sr. passed away on 18 July 1836 in Smith County, Tennessee.
