Biography

Private Russell Armstrong served in the United States Civil War.
Side: USA

Russell Bigelow Armstrong was born in Westport, [Kansas City], Missouri in 1843.[1][2][3][4] He was the son of John McIntyre Armstrong and Lucy Bigelow Armstrong.[1][5]

In the 1860 US census, Russell (17) was living in Wyandott Township, Kansas Territory, with his mother Lucy Armstrong (43) and siblings Caroline, Henry, Hellan and Martha.[1]

When the Civil War arrived, Russell served in a Kansas regiment. His military service record states that he was a Private in the 3rd Independent Battery, Kansas Light Artillery.[6] His obituary states that his job early in the war was as a mail agent, running from Kansas City to Brookville. [5]

He married Rachel Mahaley Brown on 15 May 1868 in Erie, Ohio.[7]

In the 1870 US census, Russel B Armstrong (26) and Rachel B Armstrong (26) were living in Wyandotte Township, Kansas, with son Walter (0).[2]

In the 1880 federal and 1885 state censuses, Russell and Rachel were still in Wyandotte, with children Walter, Wallace, Lucy, Anna Clara, Paul and Ralph.[3][8]

On July 31, 1889, Russell was boarding an elevated train when he slipped and had both legs amputated below the knee due to the injuries. [9]

In the 1900 US census, R B Armstrong (57) and Rachel C Armstrong (57) were living in Wyandotte, Kansas, with children Walter, Lucy, Anna, Clara, Paul and Ralph, and with Tina Armstrong (daughter in law), Wallace Armstrong (granddaughter) and Nellie Olson (ward).[10]

He died on 7 Jun 1901, and was buried at Quindaro Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States.[11] [5][4]
