Jonathan W Armstrong volunteered as a soldier in the War Between the States under Capt. Phillip Therelkeld in Co. 'A', 4th Alabama Calvalry, as did Nick and Tom Sandlin, brothers of his wife, Martha Elizabeth Sandlin.

Mr. J.W. Armstrong was born near Pinhook, Lawrence county, Ala., June 20, 1828, and departed this life June 2, 1899, aged 70 years 11 months and 12 days. Was married to Miss Martha E. Sandlin in 1854. Ten children were born to them, 8 girls and 2 boys -- 2 of the girls have passed away, leaving the other 8 with a widowed mother to realize the great loss of a husband and father. The children all grown and married except 2. Mr. Armstrong volunteered as a soldier in the civil war at Landersville, under Capt. Thrilkield in 1862.[4]
He married Martha Elizabeth Sandlin.
He served in the Confederate Army.
He is buried in Landersville, Lawrence County, Alabama.
