Biography

John was the first male child for Adam and Isabelle so if naming conventions were used Adam's father name would have been John. His education would have been what ever public schools were available in Connellsville at the time. The 1880 census age 26 he is single and living with his parents and working as a clerk for the Railroad. He married Sarah Long Herbert in 1883 in Connellsville. He went on to become ticket agent for the railroad then entered the insurance business. His banking career started at the Youghiogheny Bank as a book keeper in 1886, and on to assistant cashier. In April of 1887 he moved on to a cashier position at Scottsdale Bank and stayed for 3 years. He then purchased a interest in the Calhoun & Co Planing Mill then went back to a cashier position at Connellsville 2nd National Bank. He was a charter officer in this bank in 1890. He also is listed as a organizer of the Indian Ridge Coal Company in the Pocahontas Coal Region in West Virginia. He is listed as director, secretary and treasurer at various times for this this company. He also is listed as a director and treasurer of Zenith Coal and Coke Company. If you look at history this was the time of Henry Clay Frick and his multiple coke ovens in the Connellsville area as well as Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon making their millions in Pittsburgh and beyond. John built a beautiful home up on road East Crawford on the hill above Connellsville. He also like his father was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the National Guard, Company C, 10th regiment for 5 years. He served with the regiment during the RR riots in Pittsburgh in 1877. He died July 5th 1928 of heart problems and his estate was valued at 301,000 not including his home so he had become quite wealthy.
