CONCATENATE OBIT Friday, June 26 1953.
William James Armstrong.
It was with deep regret that the community learned of the death of
W.J. Armstrong on the 8th June 1953 at the Royal South Sydney Hospital, in his 71st year. The late Mr. Armstrong was a very familiar figure in the district and will be missed by his many friends. His funeral one of the largest seen in Delegate, was fitting tribute to his popularity. He was born at Delegate in the year 1882, one of a family of eight. His father for many years conducted a business in the old home, now occupied by his daughter Mrs. Taylor. While still in his teens he moved to Greigs Flat, Pambula, where his family was engaged in farming. At the age of 17 years he enlisted for service in the Boer War, and on his return from Africa he followed the occupation of miner, both in coal mines and gold mines of various States. Twelve years were spent mining in New Zealand and he could relate many interesting tales of that country. He returned to Delegate at age 32 and married Daisy Stone in the Presbyterian Church. To this union there were seven children. A widow and six children survive him - Jack, Jean (Mrs Stokes), Nina (Mrs Taylor), Dawn (Mrs G Walker), Beth (Delegate) and Alma (Mrs Thoroughgood Wollongong). One daughter Rita died at an early age. There are also ten grandchildren, to whom he was
affectionately known as "Big Bill". He also leaves three sisters and one brother, Myrt (Mrs Mitchel, of Concord), Jess (Mrs Heron, of Bega), Nina (Mrs Stores, of Glebe), and Arch (Cronulla). One sister and two brothers predeceased him some years ago. The Masonic Lodge of Delegate was one of his main interests, which he attended regularly up till a few months prior to his passing. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 33 years and a Past Master of the Lodge, and was held in high esteem by the brethren. After an impressive service in the Presbyterian Church, and a masonic service, the cortege moved to the Delegate cemetery where, in the absence of Rev Ashmore, Rev George, of Bega, read the burial rites. A masonic service, read by Brothers S. Reed and A Crawford was followed by the Diggers' service conducted by Digger A. Hammond.
