Biography

Mary Ann Armstrong was born 1715 in Monaghan, York County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were James Armstrong and Mary Jane Campbell. This line goes all the way back to 1100 in Scotland.

Mary Ann married George William Brandon abt. 1731 in Monaghan, York, Pennsylvania. He was born abt. 1713 in County Fermanagh, Ireland. His parents are unknown. Mary Ann and George settled in northern Rowan County, close to the South Yadkin River where the land was not as good as it was along the “big” Yadkin and in the high fertile plan around Salisbury and to the west where his wealthier relatives lived.

Mary Ann died 29 Jul 1755 in Union, Union, South Carolina. OR Death 1791 Rowan, North Carolina

.GEORGE2 BRANDON (JOHN1) was born 1702 in Ireland?, and died 14 Dec 1772 in Rowan Co, NC.He married MARY ANN ARMSTRONG Abt. 1728, daughter of JAMES ARMSTRONG and MARY CAMPBELL?.She was born Abt. 1708 in Brookboro, Co Fermanagh, Ireland, and died Abt. 1797 in Rowan Co, NC. Notes for GEORGE BRANDON: THERE ARE APPARENTLY TWO EARLY GEORGE BRANDONS.

Lancaster County governed both sides of the Susquehanna until the formation of York County in 1749 and Cumberland County in 1750.

The earliest record for George Brandon that I have found was at the Lancaster County Historical Society. He paid 25 pounds 3 Feb 1736, as recorded in the Common Pleas Appearance Docket 1735-36, Item 1, a few pages from the back. The case involved Zacheus Alexander and Walter Rogers, oddly, names from Hanover Township on the east side of the Susquehanna - at least in later years.(When did the Georges arrive and did one only later move west over the river to York County, after having spent time with the Hanover Township cousins?I'm thinking the York County Brandons immigrated after the Lancaster/Dauphin County ones.)

Another mention is from the Lancaster County Quarter Sessions 1 Aug 1738 when a George Brandon and one of the John Brandons post security for George's "good behavior."

A George "Branden" bought a spout from the estate of one of the John Catheys, d.1739.This JC (31000) was known to have lived north of the Conodoguinet above Silver's Spring in northern now-Cumberland County, at least prior to 1733. The first warrant I find for a George Brandon is dated August 11, 1743, property on "Lattimore Run" in Monaghan Township (now Franklin), present-day York County, PA.This land is traceable to George b.1702.

A totally different tract (a distance west over Latimore Creek and several ridges) was surveyed for a George Brandon "Sr." less than a month later, on September 3, 1743.This land is in Latimore Township (formerly Huntington), now-Adams County, with a corner of it in now-South Middleton Township, Cumberland County. It is unclear when this man vacated this land.

These appear to be TWO DIFFERENT GEORGE BRANDONS and one may have been the patriarch of the Old 96/Union County, South Carolina Brandon siblings that include General Thomas Brandon.

In 1744, the Lancaster County Common Pleas Docket shows Andrew Brattan the assignee for a George in George Brandon v. Brice Blair.Although there are a number of Brice Blairs, one can be found in Warrington Township due east of George Brandon b.1702's land.As for the Brattans...mama was an Armstrong, as was this George Brandon's wife, and their branches can be found with Brandons in several locations.

This may be the Ensign George Brennan on the Pennsylvania Archives list for Col. Benjamin Chambers 1747-8 "Officers of the Associated Regiment of Lancaster County, Over the River Susquehanna."

A "black George Brandon" was one of the surveyors for a road from McAllister's Mill to Yorktown in 1751. As that road is now the NE border between Adams and York County, "Monaghan George" Brandon b.1702 would have the most interest and should be "black George."

George Brandon was appointed constable of "Manahan" Township 25 April 1753 and 20 January 1754.

George Brandon was an Overseer of the Poor for "Manahan" in 1754 and again 25 March 1760.

York Co, PA deeds, Vol. C, p. 188 (recorded December 4, 1766):George Brandon and wife Maryann sell their land in Monaghan Twp to neighbor Michael Mumbart. Apparently George didn't go to Rowan Co, NC until some 20 years after the Hanover Township, Lancaster/Dauphin County Brandons. An online transcription of the Thyatira graveyard says his tombstone reads that he died 14 Dec. 1773 at age 70. But his will was written November 2nd, 1772 and entered in 1772 as well, by son Abraham and son-in-law James Withrow. Witnesses to the will writing were Sam'l Stevenson, John Graham and Hugh Grimes.

As his wife's grave is unmarked/undiscovered, I wonder if the headstone came later.

Notes for MARY ANN ARMSTRONG: I am unclear how firmly supported this Armstrong connection may be, but Armstrong researchers seem to accept this. Needs documentation from Pennsylvania.

Children of GEORGE BRANDON and MARY ARMSTRONG are:

i. JANE3 BRANDON, b. Abt. 1729, Ireland/Monaghan Twp, Lancaster Co, PA?; d. Aft. 1773, Gallatin, Sumner Co, TN; m. JOSEPH SILVER; d. Unknown. Notes for JANE BRANDON: Not mentioned in her brother George's 1821 will. (He was childless and left everything to his siblings or their heirs.) Notes for JOSEPH SILVER:

Discussions of speculator James Silvers' land purchases in now-Cumberland County c.1735 dismiss warrants to Joseph Silver as a "straw man," that is, Joseph was not a brother but a front for additional warranting by James himself. But it should be noted that one of the George Brandons, possibly this Joseph Silver's father-in-law, was at a vendue in the Silver's Spring area in 1739 and that Presbyterians from York County travelled to Silver's Spring for church until the Monaghan congregation at Dillsburg was given the go-ahead in 1760.

ii. CAPT. JOHN BRANDON, b. Abt. 1732, Ireland/Monaghan Twp, Lancaster Co, PA?; d. 1827, Rowan Co, NC; m. SARAH; b. Abt. 1736, Monaghan Twp, Lancaster Co, PA; d. Aft. May 1827.

Notes for CAPT. JOHN BRANDON: In NC in 1773 as executor of his father's will. It's reported that in Rowan Co, NC, August 4, 1789, George Brandon made a deed to John Brandon 0f 457 acres of land “on Hunting Creek, adjoining John McGuire, John Brandon, and Brice Cates, for 100 pounds.” It appears this John had no children. Brother Abraham witnesses his February 1827 will.

George Lee Hudspeth reports this John bought land confiscated from Tories in 1780 (450 acres for 225 shillings) and that it was next to his brother George's land. As George is said to have been a wagonmaster in the Revolution, this could point to the brother refered to as a Tory in Draper's account of James Withrow at King's Mountain. Abraham?

iii. GEORGE BRANDON, b. Abt. 1736, Monaghan Twp, Lancaster Co, PA; d. 1821, Rutherford Co, TN; m. (1) REBECCA NEELY, Abt. 22 Mar 1779, Rowan Co, NC (Source: Brent Holcomb, Marriages of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1753-1868, 45.); b. Abt. 1740, Rowan Co, NC; d. Unknown; m. (2) MARY GRAHAM; b. Abt. 1740, Monaghan Twp, Lancaster Co, PA; d. Abt. 1798, Rowan Co, NC.

Notes for GEORGE BRANDON: According to researcher Stephen Brandon, Cornelius Brandon b.c. 1783 Rowan Co. NC was brought to Rutherford Co. TN as a youth by George Brandon, Joseph Tennison and his wife, Sibella (Brandon) Tennison.Oral tradition says he was an adopted nephew of this George Brandon.Testing of a descendant of Cornelius verifies that line does not match these Brandons, however closely affiliated.(Cornelius m. 31 Jan 1805 Mary Phoebe Tennison.)I have to check the account since this George and his nephew George both went to Rutherford County.

From Brandon researcher Suzy Parker: Salisbury District Equity Enrolling Docket, NC Archives DSCR 207.314.4, as published in the Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, NC (BGSOTC, p.371) -

George Brandon died intestate in 1821 leaving heirs his brothers and sisters: John, Abraham, Christopher deceased (heirs Ruthy, George, Sybil wife of Joseph Tenneson, Sarah wife of Joseph Harton/Hardon, Mary Ann wife of David Sharp, Hannah wife of Thomas Campbell, Samuel, Thomas, David and Rebecca), Mary deceased wife of John McGuire (heirs George, Thomas, Sarah wife of William Bell, Mary Ann wife of Isaac Galaspie) and Sidany deceased wife of James Withrow (heirs Mary, Mary Ann and John). Chris's heirs don't quite match the ones in his own will, though.

Armstrong-5806 and Armstrong-804 appear to represent the same person because: Data Doctor 585 FindAGrave - Multiple profiles link to same grave ID - these two profiles have different dob and dod and different places of birth and death. Then they share the same parents. The husbands names are the same however each has a different profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brandon-1154 & https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brandon-33 This family definitely needs more research and cleaned up and all duplicates merged. Thanks for your cooperation!
I think you may be right. So many items match up, but others do not. Could be the same person, but needs some work to further confirm.
