Disputed Origins & Parents

  • It has been claimed, without known documentation, that John Arnold was the son of Nicholas Arnold of Northover, Somerset.
  • Horatio G. Somerby created a false pedigree for William Arnold. As often happens in genealogy wrong information travels from one ancestor to another so references to Richard Arnold, Nicholas Arnold, Nicholas Thomas Arnold, Francis Arnold and Alice Gulley were all caught up in the confusion caused by this fraud.
  • Robert Charles Anderson's The Great Migration (Vol. 1, p. 83) states that John Arnold's origin is unknown.
  • Christening of 1585 in Cheselbourne, Dorset, England. This is probably someone else with different parents. No source has been found for this 1585 christening.

Biography

Birth

According to Anderson, based on marriage, John Arnold was born by about 1603 in England.

Marriage

It is estimated that John married Susanna by about 1628. This is based on the estimated birth of Josiah in 1628.[1]

Susanna was the name of John's wife listed in John's 1664 will. Later in her life John Winthrop lists her in his medical journal: Mrs. Susan Arnold 68 years, Hartford 1666, and Widow Arnol, above 70 years, Hartford 1667.[2]

Massachusetts

He, wife Susannah and son Josiah arrived in Newtowne, Massachusetts (renamed Cambridge in 1638) by 4 August 1634, when he received a five acre grant of land in the Westend Field in Newtowne. [3] He also received a share of an undivided meadow in Cambridge on 20 August 1635. [3] By 8 Feb 1635, he had a house in town. [3] He was made freeman on 6 May 1635 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[4]

Connecticut

Lot # 147

John Arnold and his family were original founders of the town of Hartford, Connecticut. His name is on the Founders' Monument in the Ancient Burial Ground.

In the land inventory dated February 1639/40, Arnold held eight parcels of land including Lot #147 on the map, where his house was, also some upland, meadow and swamp. [5]

After the death of Rev. Hooker, the church members had some disagreements with the Rev. Samuel Stone and there was a movement for many of the members to remove to Hadley. John signed the agreement on 18 April 1659 to remove.[6] John didn't go to Hadley, but evidently the members of Hadley thought well of him. The record says he was to weak to go to Hadley. The Hadley residents, in 1662, voted to give John Arnold £5 a year, during his life, and 50s a year to his wife after his decease.[6] On 22 February 1670 Susannah did separate from the First Church after John's death. She was an original member of Second Church.[7]

Will

Founder's Monument Hartford

John Arnold's will dated 20 August 1664 begins: "I John Arnold of Hartford uppon the River of Connecticut." The inventory was taken on 26 December 1664. The will mentions his wife Susannah, son Josiah, son Joseph, son Daniel and granddaughter Mary Buck.[8]

Death and Burial

He died between the date of will, 20 August 1664, and the inventory date of 26 December 1664. No gravestone remains for John Arnold (if there ever was one). He was probably buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.

Children

  • Josiah Arnold born about 1628 in England.[9] He is named in his father's will on 22 August 1664, but no further record.
  • Joseph Arnold has no proof of birth year. Anderson says about 1634, but it is not known whether he was born in England or America. His brother Josiah is shown on an immigration record, but not Joseph. He married Elizabeth Wakeman (1630-1698) between 21 August 1659 and 11 February 1660. Joseph died on 22 October 1691 in East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut.
  • Mary Arnold born about 1636 in Hartford, Connecticut. She married Emanuel Buck (1623-1695) on 17 April 1658 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.
  • Daniel Arnold born about 1638 in Hartford, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Osborn by about 1676.
  • John ?[10][11]
  • Unknown daughter ?[10][11]
Note: Neither John or an unknown daughter are mentioned in Arnold's will. Anderson states that John is unsubstantiated and doesn't even mention the Unknown daughter. But, did Trumbull have access to something that we are missing?

A possibility maybe?

Intriguing, but a good bit earlier than current estimations. There's a record stating Josiah's age as "about 30" in 1658, so if that's him, they were almost a decade off. Or maybe the first Josiah died young and he's a later son?

And 1617-1621 is already getting a bit late for a 1600 marriage, so 1628 has Susan bearing children close to 50.

Definitely an interesting possibility, but it needs work to make the dates work.

Yes, not sure about the marriage but the baptisms might be the children. Am trying to see if any wills might be useful.

According to his bio, Anderson places his marriage to Susannah about 1628, but we have it in the data fields as 1644?

Thanks for catching that discrepancy. Fixed.

Anne B, I agree with all of your proposals. Wikitree is the best place to clear up the many false genealogies floating around. I like your statements in the text explaining this. You have my support.

I am going to post a question in G2G about Elizabeth's existence. If no one come up with a good source, I'm going to merge her into Susanne.

Notes for future reference: I do not believe that Henry is a child of this John. I also question Elizabeth Unknown.

Find a grave is not a good source in this case (no stone), although we have used the information from Anderson also. Pedigree files are always suspect.

Not sure what to make of it but, LDS has this:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "Pedigree Resource File," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:3H8D-DGP : accessed 2016-09-16), entry for Tomasin /Dure/.

find a grave has the following:

Birth: 1603, England Death: 1664 Hartford Hartford County Connecticut, USA

Born by about 1603, based on estimated date of marriage. Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 & 1st settled in Cambridge MA. Later moved to Hartford CT. Died in Hartford between 22 Aug 1664 (date of will) & 26 Dec 1664 (date of inventory). Married by about 1638, Susanna ____. On 21 Jun 1666, John Winthrop Jr. treated "Arnoll, Susan, widow of Hartford, 68 y.," & again on 12 Mar 1666/7 "Arnol, [blank], widow above 70 y. of Hartford." Source: Anderson's Great Migration Study Project.

Find A Grave contributor Leslie J. Steuben adds: John is my 7th great grandfather. First wife was believed to be Tomasin Dure, who died 15 Feb 1631 in England. [Susanna was 2nd wife] Son: Joseph Arnold

Anybody have any information on Elizabeth Unknown? I didn't see anything about a first wife.

The changes mentioned below are fine with me. I've done no research on this line beyond what I have sources for Epaphras Arnold who died in Benson, VT in 1790. I appreciate any efforts to clean this up.

Anne,

I searched LDS records for John Arnold (Arnold-445) and saw John Arnold's father listed as either Nicholas Arnold, Nicholas Thomas Arnold or Richard Arnold. There is no mention of Francis so I'm OK with removing him. I won't question Anderson's assertion of no known parents).

I also saw records saying John's mother was Alice Gulley. Again, I won't question Anderson.

I did see mention of Henry and Sarah as children in some records. I know LDS records are not proof but it does 'beg' the question. If you have a source for John's children in addition to John's will, could you add it? Generically, please do what you think is appropriate.

Francis needs to be disconnected as Father. There is no proof, evidence, hint, or source. Child Henry needs to be disconnected, he doesn't belong. And I think Sarah needs to be merged away. Objections?
