Biography

Notables Project
François-Marie Arouet is Notable.

François-Marie Arouet was born in 1694. His baptismal records indicate a birth on November 21 in Paris, France. According to this record he is supposedly the son of François Arouet and Marie-Marguerite Daumard. He himself maintained throughout his life that his birthdate was February 20, that he was born in Châtenay, and that he was the illegitimate son of Claude Guérin de Rochebrune, a writer of popular songs.[1] François-Marie Arouet adopted the name Arouet de Voltaire in 1718 and already in 1719 he had dropped the use of his birth name all together, signing de Voltaire or just Voltaire. [2]
Numerous biographies, books, and articles have been written about Voltaire, his life, literary work, and philospohy. A brief introduction can be found on Wikipedia.

He died in 1778 in Paris.[3] In 1791 his remains were reburied in the Panthéon in Paris.[4]

Biographie

His pseudonym is supposed to be an anagram of "Arouet l(e) jeune."

That's one of many hypotheses, but historians don't actually know how he chose this pen name.
