Samuel's parentage and family life in Virginia are unknown. He first appears in TN records in 1816, when he married Winnifred Rhodes in Maury, TN . In the 1820 US census, his residence is in Hickman County. He also appears on the Early Land records for Hickman in 1821. In 1836, he is shown residing in Lawrence County, TN on the Early Tax records for that year. He continued to live in and around Lawrenceburg, TN until his death in 1861. In 1840, he owned several hundred acres of land (per land transfer records in the Lawrence County Archives, Lawrenceburg, TN), but by the 1860 US Census, he was living at the county poor farm and listed as a pauper. He is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, adjacent to the Bentley plot (his daughter Araminta married L. Mino Bentley).
Sometime in the 1970's, an industrious volunteer incorrectly marked his grave with a military grave marker belonging to Samuel B. Arrington, a doctor who joined the CSA in 1862, more than a year after Samuel L. had passed away.
