Biography

  • Extract from "Allegations for Marriage Licenses issued by the Bishop of London 1611-1828: Vol. II" by Col. Joseph Lemuel Chester (1887)

June 19, 1669: William Windham, of Fellbrigge, co. Norfolk, Esq., about 22, and Katherine Ashe, daughter of Sir Joseph Ashe, Bart, about 17; father's consent alleged by Robert Pepper, of town of Norwich, Dr. of Law; at Twickenham, Middlesex.

Great grandmother of the celebrated statesman, William Wyndham. Katherine was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Mary Ashe. She married William Windham of Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk. The Windham family were wealthy and well-established, having owned Felbrigg Hall since at least the early part of the fifteenth century.

After the breakdown of James (her nephew) and Catherine Ashe's marriage, their daughter Martha was brought up by her aunt, Katherine Windham. Martha then married the son of Katherine and William Windham in 1715. After the death of the second baronet, Martha transferred her Wawne and Twickenham inheritance to her husband, Joseph Windham, who took the name Ashe (Carrick, 'The lords of the manor of Wawne', pp.16-18).
