John Ash was born May 16, 1796 in Virginia. He was the son of Christian Ash and Libby Swiger.

A marriage bond for John Ash and Hannah (Underwood) Ash was dated May 19, 1818 in Tyler, Virginia (now West Virginia). Permission to marry was from Hannah's father, Sam'l Underwood.
