Biography

Thomas was born about 1714 and served as a private in the Revolutionary War. He received his final pay as a soldier 23 May 1783. Legend has him dying at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, while other believe he accompanies his sons into Kentucky (would have possibly been at the Salt River pioneer settlement near McAfee just north of Harrodsburg, KY circa 1785).

According to Thomas' father, Captain Thomas Ashby's will, Thomas was given one shilling. The will provides for land to younger brothers Benjamen, Henry and Stephen. Elder brother Robert should have inherited land by primogeniture and any lands bequeathed to him are not specified in the will.

Cited in Fleming's work from Deed Book 1, Frederick Co, Va, p. 311: 4 Aug 1747 Thomas Ashby, Jr. of Frederick Co, Va. indentured Richard Murray (Murrel, Merrell) of Frederick to work 6 years and 5 months in return for "one suit of close, a hatt, shoes, stockins and a fine shirt . . . working cloaths . . . meet, drinks, lodging, washing," and after service, a horse saddle, etc. . . . (spelling form original document)

Minute Book 1755-57. Records of Prince William County, VA., listed Thomas Ashby Jr., as a surveyor in 1755.

Deed Book 1, Frederick Co, Va., p. 197: Thomas Ashby, Jr. deeded for good will and affection "to my loving brother, John Ashby" a tract in Frederick County, part of the tract purchased form Thomas Branson, Jr. - 50 acres. Witness: John Hardin

Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds, Jullson, 1926, Chapter V, Military Warrants 1782-1793, page 314: Thomas Ashby 100 acres Warrant No. 959, 3 years Virginia line, dated 20 June 1783.

He passed away about 1790.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

This profile has been updated to include the family tree of Thomas Ashby Jr. (also referred to as the II by others) as compiled by Peggy Fleming in The Heyday of Onton (see source). Fleming's research indicates that Thomas Ashby Jr. married ca. 1738 Elizabeth "Betty" of Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co,. Virginia. The spouse previously associated with this Thomas Ashby Jr, (McCullogh-586), has been disassociated. Both Henry Ashby and Mary Ashby were born after the marriage date of the other Thomas Ashby to McCullogh-586. Evidently there were two different Thomas Ashbys and the Find a Grave record instead claims two spouses for Thomas Ashby Jr. You can see in the Flowers comments by several persons that this is incorrect. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/117601360/thomas-ashby

Ashby-149 and Ashby-2163 appear to represent the same person because: same person
Location of Death on the Ashby-447 page looks much more likely as in the next county North of the family home county, even though in another State now.

Collaboration on DoD is needed. If Pvt Thomas was paid in May 1783, 1786 could be more accurate. - a nG-Grand-nephew
