Jediah Ashcraft served in the Revolutionary War and was granted land for his service under George Rogers Clark in the campaign against the British and Indians in the Illinois Territory. Jediah took up land on Bear Creek in Grayson County (then Jefferson County) and later bought land in what is now Hardin County, Kentucky.

Jediah died in 1794 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was killed by Indians and probably buried nearby, however the site is unknown, but was near Big Clifty Bridge, now in Grayson County, Kentucky. Jediah Ashcraft's will was probated 26 Aug 1794 in Hardin County, Kentucky.

"Jediah: Probably born about 1735 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania he grew up on Sleepy Creek. “In May of 1775 Jediah was given the responsibility with David Steel of building a road from Shirtee’s Creek (Chartier’s) to Devore’s Ferry (Monongahela River, PA). This road was in the general location of the present Route #136.” He was appointed constable of Washington County, Pennsylvania by the Court of Yokagania. In December of 1775 he signed a petition opposing the formation of Transylvania, a proposed new country west of the Virginia territory.

He married Nancy Friend and they lived in Harrison County, Virginia. Then Jediah, his wife, Nancy, their five children and several other family members floated down the Ohio River in a flat boat to Phillip’s Fort in Virginia. They were among the earliest settlers there.

In 1782, Jediah was part of General George Rogers Clark’s expeditions against the Indians into the Ohio and Kentucky territories. He later relocated his family to Grayson, Hardin and LaRue Counties that later became part of Kentucky. Here he owned over 1200 acres.

In July of 1793, Jediah had his will drawn up, which he signed “Mark” in a shakey script which could have indicated an illness. The following year in 1794, as he was returning home from a visit to his Grayson County land, he was ambushed, killed, and scalped by the Indians at Big Clifty Bridge in Grayson County, Kentucky."
