Biography

James was born in 1863. He is the son of James Pinkney Ashley (1835–1905) and Margaret Jernigan Ashley (1841–1898). His siblings are: John Ashley (1861–1906), Izora Pinkney Ashley Reaves (1864–1944), Annie L. Ashley Cobb (1869–1944), Manilah Jane Ashley Morgan (1872–1946), Minnie Ellen Ashley Shepherd (1874–1929), Charles T Ashley (1876–1923), and Edward Hugh Ashley (1879–1954). He is listed in his hometown of Tippah, Mississippi with his parents on the 1870 Census. [1]

James Ashley married Texas McDonald (Texas Rosanah McDonald (1878-1931)) on October 8, 1893 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. [2] They are listed together on the 1900 Census in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. [3] It is believed that the couple had at least 3 children (based on census reports) Effie Mae Ashley (1907–1965) Clayton Ashley (1908–Deceased) and Homer Ashley (1910–Deceased).

He passed away in 1939 and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah, McIntosh County, Oklahoma. [4]
