Mary Ashton, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Ashton, was baptised on 2 February 1840 in st Peter's church, Liverpool, Lancashire. Her father was an
engineer and the family lived in Portland Street. [1]
Her father died and her mother remarried to Jonathan Butterworth.
In 1851 she was with her mother, stepfather, 2 sisters and a half-sister in Bradford, Manchester, Lancashire. [2]
