Biography

Doris Eleanor Croll was born to Charles Croll and Maria Ashton in 1901 at 'Gwylata', 54 Elphin Grv Glenferrie, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She was the second of their three children, and was brought up in a modestly well-off family, living her whole life in three suburbs in the East of Melbourne.

Nell, as she was known, was, like her mother, a devoted member of the Baptist Church, following the severely conservative lifestyle of a fervantly evangelical woman of the time. A bright student, Nell was a scholarship student at Methodist Ladies College in Melbourne, then the second largest school in the Southern Hemisphere before qualifying as a Licentiate to The Victorian Divisional Council of the Commonwealth Institute of Accountants. According to family tradition she was the first female accountant in Australia.

Nell didn't follow her profession, choosing instead to marry Thomas Scott Gordon Grieve. Gordon's mother had recently died, and Nell moved into the Grieve family home a couple of blocks from her own home. She was to live there from 1942 until 1957, when they moved to Mont Albert. Nell's time was occupied by activities to do with her church: collecting, packaging and mailing goods to be sent to missionaries in Africa and supporting the work of her local church in Hawthorn, of which she was a member for her entire life.

In her middle age Nell suffered from cancer which, although seemingly successfully treated, recurred to eventually claim her life in August 1976. She was interred at Borondoorah Cemetery, strangely not with her husband, who was interred with her parents.
