His birth year of 1790 is estimated based on his marriage year. Unlike his wife, his own birth is not recorded in Lynn, suggesting he was born elsewhere. And in fact, there are no Aston births in Lynn prior to the 1811 birth of his own child.
He should not be confused with Samuel G. Ashton, who was about the same age, also in Lynn, but a painter and married to 1) Rebecca; 2) Martha. Samuel G Ashton died of dysentery in 1848.
Samuel Ashton and Mary Lewis filed their intention to marry on 3 Mary 1811 in Lynn.[2]
Samuel and Mary had many children between 1811 and at least 1831. In their birth records, he is listed as "Samuel Ashton Jr" probably to distinguish him from Samuel G Ashton having children during the same time period, but also suggesting that his father might have been named Samuel.
One Samuel Ashton Jr died in Lynn 14 Dec 1821, but this can't be him because he and Mary were still having children for ten years after this time.
He might be the Samuel Ashton who died in Lynn in 1840, because there are probate records starting in 1641 for a Samuel Ashton, with wife Mary as administratrix. She indicates that Samuel left three children:[4]
