Biography

Samuel Ashton was born about 1795 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. On the 1851 census he was living with his wife Martha and three children, Walter, Abiah, and Emily, in Sheffield, Yorkshire. His occupation was tailor journeyman. The maiden name his wife is not known, but she was born about 1808 in Campsall, Yorkshire.^[1]

On the 1860 census, Samuel age 56 was living with his family in St. Louis Ward 4, St. Louis, Missouri. There is now a younger child in the family, Mary age 8 who was born in England, so the family must have immigrated after 1852.^[2]

According to his Find A Grave memorial, Samuel died April 3, 1877 at the age of 76 years and 10 months (which would make his birth year 1800). He was buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.^[3]

On the 1880 census, Samuel's wife Martha was widowed and living with her daughter and son-in-law Emily and Robert Kissack and their three children Robert, Martha and Mary. Also living in the same household was Martha and Samuel's daughter Mary Ashston age 25.^[4]

Martha Ashton died March 27, 1891 at the age of 81 years and 3 days, and was buried next to her husband.^[5]
