Horace Ashton was born on 20 Mar 1912 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of John Ashton (1863–1941) and his wife Lucy Lumb (1865–1959).

He died on 13 January 1997 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England.
