Biography

This profile is part of the Ashton Name Study.

Richard Assheton (c.1511-1550) was the eldest son of Sir Richard Assheton (c.1482-1549), kt. and his first wife, Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Strickland, kt. of Lonsdale, Cumberland. He succeeded his father in 3 Edward VI (1549-50).

He m. (1) in 1521 (settlement 20 August), Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Gerrard, kt. of Bryn, Lancashire; and (2) c.1541, Katherine (d. 1572), daughter of Sir Robert Bellingham of Burneside, Westmorland.

He died 4 August 1550; an inquisition post mortem was held 18 September 1550. His widow married 2nd, Sir William Radclyffe (d. 1568) of Ordsall and 3rd, c.1570, Sir William Davenport, and died 31 April 1572.

  1. Dorothy Assheton (b. 1543; fl. 1573), baptised 28 August 1543; married Alexander Hoghton (d. 1581) of Hoghton Tower (Lancs) (who m2, Elizabeth, widow of George Warburton and daughter of [forename unknown] Hesketh), but had no issue; died before 1580;
  2. Margaret Assheton (1544-1609); said to have been born 6 April 1544; married as a child, 1550 (settlement 6 February), William Davenport (d. 1585) of Bramhall/Bromhall (Cheshire) and had issue four sons and one daughter; she and her husband inherited the manor of Casterton (Westmld) from her parents; died 1609.

Illegitimate son:

  1. John Assheton (fl. 1550).

I guess I am really dumb but there are presented two Richard Ashtons with different birth dates but otherwise have identical children and death dates!

Explanation required.
