Is this supposed to be the John Ashton who came to Virginia in 1671 and died here in 1682? That man had brothers Peter and John and a wife Elizabeth who remained in England. There is no John Ashton married to a Native American woman in this area of Virginia at this time.

The Following Website has much History worth a read. Indian Reservations.net http://www.indianreservations.net/2016/03/?m=1

During the 1600s, Virginia was the home of the Powhatan Tribe. Powhatan Chiefs had many wives & children. History tells us some daughters were married off or traded to European men. Their descendants were often listed as White or Mixed. Finding American Indian Genealogy remains to be difficult.

There were three John Ashton names & several “probably” family links. This profile is uncertain & needs further investigation.

Other books are found that state 40-50 colonist married or interbred with Native Americans. Many of whom left the Colony to live with Indians due to starvation in Colony. Chiefs married their daughters to settlers to promote relationships with whites, but later their relationships broke apart. It is UNKNOWN who, when, where Mixed children were born. One must rely on DNA like GedMatch to confirm. But that does not confirm who, only that American Indian is in your genes. I read somewhere that many American Indians also carry Iberian DNA. I recommend that ALL DNA Testers descendants upload to GedMatch for further studies & compare.
