Biography

John Atherton (b. c.1557-1617) was the 1st s. of Sir John Atherton by his 2nd w. Margaret, da. and coh. of Thomas Catterall of Catterall. He was high sheriff of Lancashire in 1582, and one of the Parliamentary representatives of the county in 1586, and for Lancaster in 1588–9. He m. (1) Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Byron, 1s. 2da.; (2) bef 1587 Katherine, da. and coh. of John, 2nd Lord Conyers, 2s. 3da. He was buried at Leigh 23 May, 1617.
