George was born on October 7, 1926 and passed away on Monday, August 22, 2011. George was a resident of Hopewell, Virginia at the time of his passing. He was an Army Veteran of WWII. He was married to Elsie. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hopewell Humane Society or First United Methodist Church. Send Condolences

George M. Atkins Obituary

George Melvin Atkins, 84, of Hopewell, Va., and born in Mineral, Va., passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's on Monday, Aug. 22, 2011.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the DuPont Masonic Lodge 289, was very active in the business community, and was the former owner of Atkins Furniture. Mr. Atkins was a member of the Kiwanis Club, and Kiwanian of the Year 1988-1989, was president of the Retail Merchant's Association in 1964, a member of First United Methodist Church, and served on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Atkins was a member of Jordan Point Country Club. In 1985, he became the license inspector for the city of Hopewell and retired in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Henrietta Waldrop Atkins; brothers, Louis, James and Aubrey Atkins; sisters, Lucille Robbins, Louise Green and Evelyn Griffin.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mae Chapman Atkins; son, David C. Atkins and wife, Spring Clary Atkins, of Prince George, George Munford Atkins of Hopewell; daughter, Daphne Anne Atkins of Virginia Beach and Richmond; grandchildren, Caleigh Clary Atkins and Matthew Chapman Jones; and dear kitty cats, Sally Belle and Sugar Bunn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hopewell Humane Society or First United Methodist Church. Condolences may be registered online at www.jtmorriss.com.
