Biography

There are few records of Ruth, her father Thomas Atkins, mother Elizabeth Scammond, and husband Thomas Haskins. Ruth's father was in Kennebec, Maine, by at least May 15, 1654. In 1716, a deed in York County, Maine, shows that a portion of Thomas's property was distributed to "John and Ruth Haskins," and it refers to "John Haskins of Scituate county of Plymouth husbandman and Ruth his wife...." Ruth acknowledged the deed on April 27, 1716.[1] Although there is no record of Ruth's marriage to John Haskins, from the above, we can be relatively sure of two things: Ruth, the daughter of Thomas Atkins married John Haskins; and Ruth and John Haskins were married and living in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts, in April 1716. Barclay estimated that Ruth was born in about 1663. Although she gives no reason for this estimate, it is reasonable if Ruth married John Haskins in about 1684. Barclay indicates Elizabeth's mother was unknown; however, in the 1682 will of Elizabeth Saffin: "to cousin Elizabeth Atkins, brother John Scammond's daughter", clearly indicates Elizabeth Scammond was her mother.[2] The last record of Ruth was when she acknowledged the deed in 1716, so she passed away sometime after that date.
