Biography

Leilani was born on 17 May 1983, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Bellflower, CA. She is the daughter of George Atkins and Beth Brunken. She grew up in a trailer that was parked in her grandparents driveway in La Puente with her parents until the age of 5.

For kindergarden the family moved to Baldwin Park, Leilani attended Center Elementary School. The apartment complex they lived in was infested with gangs so before Leilani started first grade they moved to an apartment complex in West Covina.

From 1st to halfway through 4th grade, Leilani attending Hollingworth Elementary. She was active in the girlscouts and GATE (Gifted and Talented Education). In 1990 her brother Steven was born and a year later her mother suffered a stroke at the young age of 30. In 1993 her father's job relocated the family to Omaha, NE.

From the middle of grade 4 through 6th grade, she attended Joslyn Elementary School. In 5th grade she starting learning how to play the oboe but by grade 8 she gave it up. She was a member of an elite local chorale group called the Omaha Mini Singers between 5th-8th grade. In 1994 her sister Danielle was born, in an attempt to make sure the siblings were close (unlike with her and her brother) her parents wanted 11 year old Leilani to be apart of the process. She attended all lamaze classes and was in the delivery room. She was the only one who saw her sister born. The doctor had not arrived yet, the nurses had their backs turned while they set up the room and her father was by her mother's side when the newborn self delivered. It was Leilani who said to the nurses "I think I have a sister now" to get their attention to the newborn on the table.

Leilani was accepted through a lottery to McMillan Jr. High School. She participated in dance, drama, track and field, gymnastics and volleyball. She attended advanced and honors classes and took a liking to woodshop. Before the school year started for 8th grade her parents bought a house close to her school, they still live there to this day.

Leilani attended grades 9 to 12 at Omaha North High School which was a math and computer magnet school. She was co-captain of the freshman volleyball team in 1998. In 1999 she played on the JV team and in 2000 she returned to the co-captain position of the JV team. Her senior year the coaching staff was changed and requirements for making varsity said that players had to join a summer league, being unable to afford the club sports she worked all summer to do what she could to practice daily and improve her skills but despite her effort the coaching staff said she was unqualified to play varsity her senior year. Not making the varsity volleyball team was the most upsetting moment in her life for it was the first time she realized that no matter how hard she worked no amount of effort could beat having money. So instead she joined the varsity bowling club and they placed 4th in the state the year.

She began working when she was 15 in order to pay for a high school sponsored trip to France. She was the only student who paid for the trip themselves. She worked a summer office job, taught elementary students volleyball, worked at a local movie theater and sold candy bars to her fellow students in order to afford the trip.

From 2001 to 2004, Leilani studied Architecture at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA, she did not complete her Bachelor of Arts due to its high cost. Her goal was to become a set designer for the motion picture industry, like many things in her life that never came to happen.

From 2005-2013 she worked at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim as an entertainment costumer, this is where she grew to hate corporations and became bitter about growing up in poverty. Between the years of 2006 - 2009 she could not afford rent and lived in her car despite working 40+ hours a week at Disney. During this period of time she also regularly suffered hunger being unable to afford food. There were times sometimes for months at a time that her friends would help her out by letting her stay with them or buying her lunch. She was a fiercely independent person though and never asked for help and only excepted it when it was forced upon her.

It took her 7 years to find a better job and from 2013-2019 she worked at a digital media company. In 2016 she was awarded an all expense paid trip to Seoul, Korea for 10 days in recognition of her hard work. Leilani listened to kpop and watched Korean television shows almost exclusively so it was a dream trip for her. Despite being a dedicated employee and hard worker she was fired in 2019 for her honesty when she brought up to management that employees were not happy about being overworked and underpaid.

That leads to now in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is still out of work and the pandemic isn't making her job search any easier.

She maintained her love volleyball as an adult and has played in coed leagues for that and recreational softball. She also has taken incredible trips to national parks in the western US and visited Mexico, France, Sri Lanka and Korea. She has never been in a relationship and has no future plans to have any children. Her brother suffers from Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism, and will also probably never have children. Continuing the family line is being left up to her sister, but her parents hopes for grandchildren aren't looking good.

Leilani has been working on her family tree on and off since 2013, when she finally decided to help her mother after years of her mother trying to get her interested. She has no interest in knowing who her family is but does enjoy puzzles and it turns out genealogy is very much a giant puzzle.

Hello,

I m trying to navigate all this info! I guess my first question is how do I know my family tree thus far is correct before I go any further. I have a specific ancestor in mind but seem to have hit a dead end? How can i verify that she is in fact my great grandmother? What is GEDmatch testing?

Hello Leilani: I need some help. I tried to post an 1860 US census to a 3rd great grandfather and his wife and children, etc. who lived with him. Somehow in 2021 it was accidently deleted. I do not know how. When I try to assign the census to these people it refers to the census, but will not post it in their images because its still deleted. So its there, but not there. How do I either delete and restart the image or bring the image back?

Thanks. Russ Kruse

I need a little more information like which profile you originally uploaded the picture to. Generally when all profiles are removed from an image that is how a photo gets deleted, as long as there is a profile connected to a photo than the photo still remains. If I know the profile you are referring to I can look to see if I recognize the specific problem you describe.

Hi Leilani, I love your beautiful Hawaiian name. I have been trying very hard to figure out a problem. Btw I'm an East Bay native, now living in Sonoma Co. My mom was born in Pasadena. I'm sorry you've had such a difficult life. I hate corporations too. My life has been difficult in other ways. So my problem is in trying to find the real mother and father of Huldah Barnard. The only candidates have been Thomas Barnard and wife "Polly." Some say "Polly's" mother was Polly Cotrel and her father was Nicholas Bovee. There are few solid connections. The other problem with them is that they are also the parents of Jacob Bovee, for which there is more evidence. Jacob Bovee and Elizabeth Eva Rachelle had a child named Abraham Bovee. "Polly," had a child named Huldah Barnard with Thomas Barnard. Huldah Barnard married Abraham Bovee and they had Mary Jane Bovee. Is such a relationship likely or acceptable? I've looked at censuses and other genealogies, but no firm connections exist. Can you help, at least in advising whether that entangled family relationship is likely?

Thanks in advance! Elisabeth (Lisa) Hartwell Bollman

It is actually quite common for first cousins to marry as you get further back in time and as people live in more isolated environments. It makes detangling a family tree sometimes very difficult. I have many such connections in my own family. So in answer to your question "Is such a relationship likely or acceptable?" the answer is yes to both. If you can manage to track down an obituary for either Huldah or Thomas that might be able to shed some light on "Polly". Also Polly is sometimes used as a nickname for Mary and I have also seen it used a couple times for Margaret so you might check those names as well.

Thank you Leilani for helping understand how to proceed with a merge problem I am having.

Helen

Hello Leilani. I saw where you listed merges as one of your mentor services. I was working on Harris-45064 and somehow I created 7 copies of her profile, all at the same time. I do not understand what I did or how to prevent it from happening in the future. This happened at 14:12 on 14 Feb 2021. I merged them away but would like to know how i made this mess in the first place.

Sorry if this is not the right place for this query but did not know where to put it. If there is a better place for it, please let me know.

Thank you for your time . Al Clements Clements-2728

I looked at your contributions and all the changes under Harris-45064. This looks like a glitch and not something you did wrong. My only guess would be perhaps you clicked the save button more than once and that caused it but this does just look like a glitch. If you are concerned about this happening again I would email [email address removed] and tell them of the situation, they will have more ability to look at the backend stuff to see what went wrong.

Hi Leilani

You changed the the information for Elizabeth (Pratt) Coombs' [Pratt-5632] date of death and set it at being May 1789. This effected the parentage information for nine of Joseph Coombs' children. Can you please provide the source for listing her death as May 1789?

I don't believe that date is correct as Joshua Coombs' marriage (2nd) intentions were published at Falmouth, Cumberland County, Massachusetts Bay Colony [ME], on 29 Aug 1736 to Mary STICKNEY, both of Falmouth (Portland, ME, Vital Records, page 31; and Old Portland, ME, Records, page 31). The indications are that Elizabeth (Pratt) Coombs and their daughter, Elizabeth Coombs, had both died before Aug 1736 and Joshua went to the Spurwink settlement at Falmouth [Maine] to be with his brothers Anthony and Peter Coombs.

Would you please provide a source for the information you have posted.

Thank you.

I looked at the profile and my contributions, I did not change her death date I only added her as the mother of Mary Coombs, I don't know where her death date came from. However Elizabeth is listed as the mother for Mary who was born in 1743 so she would have had to be alive. Here is that source "Maine Births and Christenings, 1739-1900", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F4WZ-W31 : 14 January 2020), Mary Coombs, 1743. She is also listed as Jacob's mother in 1751 her profile in family tree has sources for all her children https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LD5G-DJM
