Biography

Barbara Atkins was baptized 12 September 1650 in Chard, Somerset, England, the daughter of Aaron Atkins.[1]

She married Thomas Smith in England, where their sons Thomas (b. abt 1648) and George were born. About 20 June 1684 she arrived in the Province of Carolina with her husband and two sons, along with Joan Atkins, Johannah Atkins, Aron Atkins, Ellen and Mary Atkins, Phillip [Phyllis] Adams, Elizabeth Adams, Matthew Crosse, and Michael Peirce.[2] Joan Atkins, Aaron Atkins, and Aaron's wife Mary Atkins all died soon after their arrival in 1684. In her Will dated 11 July 1684 Joan Atkins, widow, mentions her daughters Joana and Ellen Atkins, grandchildren Thomas and George Smith, and son [probably son-in-law] Thomas Smith. Aaron Atkins, writing his Will 1 September 1684 mentions his wife Mary, his brother John Atkins and John's daughters Rebekah, Mary, and Joanna Atkins, his sister Joanna Atkins, brother-in-law Thomas Smith, and nephews Thomas and George Smith (sons of Thomas Smith). Mary Atkins, widow of John, on 15 October 1684 mentions primarily her relatives in Chard, Somerset, but names her brother-in-law Thomas Smith of Charles Town as executor.[3]

Barbara is not mentioned by name in any of the above Wills. It is possible that she had also died shortly after their arrival in 1684. She was certainly dead before 22 March 1687/8 when her husband remarried.[4]

Research Notes

See Research Notes under Thomas Smith for a discussion of the speculation about the parents of Barbara Atkins and her husband Thomas Smith.

The unsourced FindAGrave memorial is incorrect in saying that Barbara was buried at Medway Plantation. [5] Medway was the property of Thomas Smith's second wife.
