That Dorothy, wife of John Wright, was an Awbrey, was initially put forth in 1932 by Charles Arthur Hoppins.[1] He supposedly examined 17 Dorothies as candidates for Wright's wife, settling on Dorothy Awbrey, granddaughter of the immigrant, Henry. On page 455, he later says it was Henry's son Richard who was father of Dorothy.
However, an Essex Co., Va., deed, dated Feb. 11, 1729 , clearly identifies “John Billups & Dorithy my wife … Daughter & heir Apparent of Richd. Aubery Decd Son of Henry Aubery Decd.” This proves that Dorothy, wife of John Wright was not the daughter of Richard Aubrey.[2][3]
Others have claimed she was daughter of Thomas Awbrey, who at his death left her a ward of Henry and later John Awbrey.[4]
Dorothy (maiden name unconfirmed), married John Wright about 1708.

This list of 28 is clearly wrong; where's the definitive list? There are also dupes.

↑ Thus statement makes absolutely no sense, and is convoluted. She was the granddaughter of Henry Aubrey, and is later said to be the daughter of Henry's son Richard?! What difference does that make? Is the daughter of Richard, or is the granddaughter of Henry? She may have been both. So again, this makes no sense at all!

It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Dorothy:
Berryman-1348 and Unknown-264890 are not ready to be merged because: These appear to be duplicates, unless there were two different wives of John Wright. The evidence for the Last Name at Birth seems to be inconclusive. Please add a reliable source for the LNAB is there is one available.
Berryman-1348 and Unknown-264890 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same husband, similar dates. Remove fathers and leave a Research Notes indicating who the alleged fathers are.
Berrymen-1 and Unknown-264890 are not ready to be merged because: These appear to be duplicates, unless there were two different wives of John Wright. The evidence for the Last Name at Birth seems to be inconclusive. Please add a reliable source for the LNAB is there is one available.
Should Thomas Awbrey (1625-abt.1690) be removed as the father of this profile? The section in the biography already covers that Awbrey-109 is a possible father, but there doesn't appear to be any conclusive evidence.
Hi Killian, I'm wondering what source you have used for the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) for Dorothy. The source that you've added to the comments below seems to suggest that Berryman is a possible surname, but that overall her surname is unknown. Unfortunately I can't access either the googlebook that you've added as a link, or the Ancestry tree, which seems to be private. I notice that you've proposed a merge of this profile with Berrymen-1, but there is another profile for the wife that has the LNAB Unknown, so I'm wondering if Unknown should be the preferred LNAB - or were there two different wives? If the surname is Unknown, both the profiles with the surname Berryman/Berrymen should be merged into the profile with the LNAB Unknown. It would be great to discuss this with the other profile managers of the potential duplicate wives prior to completing any merge. Also do you have a source for Dorothy's birth? She isn't mentioned as a daughter on the profile for Benjamin Berryman (1669-aft.1729) which seems to be quite a well-sourced profile. Maybe it would be good to discuss this with the profile managers for that profile as well.
Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I'm in Australia, and we have different copyright laws, so can't see a lot of googlebooks. I can see the yumpu link, but it's hard to navigate. I wasn't sure which page I needed to get to. I think anyway, that the best would be to discuss with the profile managers of John Wright and the other wives. I'd suggest working up this profile initially, which will make it easier for others to see the evidence you have. Just one other thing. I see that you completed the merge of the two Berryman/Berrymen profiles. Generally if there are several duplicates with different LNABs, it's important to clarify the preferred LNAB before starting to propose and complete merges - see Help:Merging . So for instance, if Unknown is the preferred LNAB, then each duplicate should be merged into that one profile with the LNAB Unknown. Thanks for all your hard work, and all the best with your research.

Major Francis Wright and his son John were adjusting their affairs preparatory to some important events, for they settled up all outstanding claims they and others had to certain lands, and sold other lands.
One event was the second marriage of
Francis? to Martha (- ), and the other the marriage of Johns to Dorothy -
- whose maiden name is unknown, but may
have been Berryman or the widow Dorothy Veale. Which marriage occurred first it is impossible to determine; that both events were near together is evident from the fact that Francis* Wright and John* Wright, the two sons of John' Wright, Gent., are shown by records (hereinafter) to have been born between 170% and 1712, while Richard Wright, only child of Major Francis Wright by the second wife Martha, was born not later than 1712, probably about
1710.*
Consequently the documents recorded in 170% and soon thereafter are significant, and the chances of future complications, jealousies or expectations that the new marriages and new children might engender were diminished; and also full satisfaction was honorably given by John' Wright, Gent., to certain grantees of his father, two examples of which voluntary relinquishment of his legal rights seem to have been the acts of a generous-minded and courteous gentleman, to-wit:

The records of baptism, marrlage and burial of the parish church (Yeocomico) of Cople parish, Westmoreland, Virginia, are now lost, while the same records of Washington parish were cut up into paper dolls, a few yeurs ago, by the children of an officer who gave to them the ancient church parish record book "to play with." This fate was confirmed to the author in February, 1918, at Montross, Va., by the commonwealth's attorney for Westmoreland.
Berrymen-1 and Berryman-1348 are not ready to be merged because: Source for Last Name at Birth needed. Alternatively if there is no source, consideration should be given to merging both these profiles into Dorothy Veale (Unknown) Berrymen (abt.1676-1728), which seems to be another duplicate wife.

Dorothy Veale 1676-1725 was first married to William Awbrey 1652-1699. They married in 1694 in Virginia. Dorothy Veale was the daughter of Maurice ( Morris ) Veale 1653-1696 and Dorothy Brent 1653-1734. Dorothy Veale Awbrey 1676-1725 was married secondly to John Benjamin Wright 1684-1739. They married in Virginia in 1706.
"John Wright, the only surviving child of Anne Washington and Francis Wright, born ca. 1682-1685 and died ca. 1729-1730 entry #16 married Dorothy MNU. He inherited his father's estate in Westmoreland County Virginia and moved to Prince William County about 1723. He owned 1000 acres at Powell's Run near Dumfries. John Wright and Dorothy had two children entry #45 Francis Wright and entry # 46 John Wright II. I find no son name Joseph. If you have new convincing primary source documentation which would overturn the record in the work of Dr. Justin Glenn and Charles A. Hoppin, send it to me for review because I would be happy to see it. "
Now I'm confused. If it is clear that Thomas Awbrey is not the father, is there someone else that is preferable? As her maiden name is "Unknown," there should be no father at all.
Thomas Awbrey was added back as the Father. Since Richard is clearly not the father. Pretty much Thomas should have not been removed to start with. Which has blown this debate out of control. Sometimes if you pull the wrong person out and you cant find the answer to the problem. You have look at why you created the question or did you already have the answer. Just because everyone copies the wrong information on ancestry and puts Richard is were this all started.
FYI, I received a private message explaining why Dorothy, the wife of John Wright, can't be Dorothy, dau of Thomas Awbrey; I've asked the person to add that information here.
Let’s leave her surname unknown. With notation that it's not Aubrey/Awbry.
I hope you can access this link online which goes deeper into source of her surname, allegedly. Tyler's Quarterly mentions the Veale surname.
