Research notes

In the 19th century in the village Hockenheim four religious communities existed. :Reformed protestants, Lutheran protestants, Roman-Catholics and Israelites (Jewish).
  • Until 1803 the village Hockenheim belonged to the Electoral Palatinate, whose ruler was of Reformed confession.
  • In July 1803 Hockenheim and the Kurpfalz (Electoral Palatinate on the right side of the river Rhine) came to margraviate Baden-Durlach. Baden-Durlach's ruler was of Lutheran confession.
  • Catholics and Jews also lived in Baden, the Catholics mainly in the former region of margraviate Baden-Baden, and also in the regions in the South of Baden which once belonged to former Vorderösterreich, means to Catholic Austria.
  • Jews lived in the majority in the former Electoral Palatinate. Since 1803 they became inhabitants of Electorate Baden, 1806 of Grand duchy of Baden (Großherzogtum Baden).
