Joseph arrived in Australia on the "James Pattison" on the 11th December 1838. With him was his wife Sophia Lewis and her son James Burt aged 3 Years.

Burial: 27 September 1890, Ramornie Cemetery NSW.

Cause of Death: Decay of Nature.

Joseph Austen was bought to Australia on the Bounty System by William Marshall at a cost of £18 . He came to the Clarence river area in 1845 by steamer and lived at Koolcan Station later changed to Retreat in 1847 . His son William Koolcan was born there . By 1876 the family were living on a selection on the Orana river and so became landowners and cattlemen along the Clarence river . At the time of his death on 26/9/1890 he was survived by his wife 7 sons 4 daughters 101 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren .
