AUSTEN - At his residence, Orara River, on the 26th September, JOSEPH AUSTEN ; leaving a loving wife and family of seven sons and four daughters, and a large number of relations, to mourn their loss.

Joseph Austen was bought to Australia on the Bounty System by William Marshall at a cost of £18 . He came to the Clarence river area in 1845 by steamer and lived at Koolcan Station later changed to Retreat in 1847 . His son William Koolcan was born there . By 1876 the family were living on a selection on the Orana river and so became landowners and cattlemen along the Clarence river . At the time of his death on 26/9/1890 he was survived by his wife 7 sons 4 daughters 101 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren .
