Biography

On many Family Tree Websites around the world, many members claim that William Austen the son of William Austen and Eliza Jury, married Mary Ann Sweetman, The daughter of Samuel and Mary Sweetman.

However when they arrived in Australia, the Ships Manifest for passengers arriving on the James Pattison on the 11th of December 1838, in the image opposite, shows that William Austen was the son of John Austen, a Bricklayer by trade and Elize Huggett

This William was Born on the 6th of December 1807 in Cowden Kent, England and died on the 23rd of September 1879 at Waterloo Sydney NSW. He is buried in Rookwood Cemetery next to his wife Mary Ann Sweetman.

Our William was born on the 11th of October 1806 in Rolvenden Kent England and to date we have found neither a Death date nor any marriage information regarding our William. If any member does have any further information on William it would be very much appreciated if you could contact the profile manager and if possible showing the source of this information.

By a strange coincidence also on the James Pattison was a more well known Austen arriving by the name of Joseph Austen who Married Sophia Lewis. (See Manifest Opposite)

William Austin and Mary Ann Sweetnam immigrated to Australia on the "James Pattison" arriving on the 11 December 1838. Williams place of birth was recorded as Cowden in Kent, and parents both living. He was 31 years on 19 November 1838. ^[3]

He passed away on 23 September 1879 at Raglan Street, Waterloo in New South Wales. ^[4]

AUSTIN.—September 23, at his residence, Raglan-street, Waterloo, of chronic dysentry, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude, Mr. William Austin, sen., in the 72nd year of his age. ^[5]
