Lt.-Col. Charles Austen's military career commenced in the 83rd Regiment on 14 Dec 1838. He had a distinguished career in India before coming to New Zealand.
He arrived at Auckland, N.Z. in late 1862 and took part in the operations in Taranaki.
He died from wounds received at the battle at Rangiriri on 20 Nov 1863 and was buried in Auckland Cemetery.
