In 1746, Ann's baptism in Sompting parish register is recorded thus : "Ann Daughter of Thomas Austin by [blank] his wife - June 15," So I wonder who was the 'blank'. Thomas had married Sarah Baker in Broadwater, four months previously on 10 February. The Bishop's Transcripts for Sompting show the same entry, but in another hand (or added later) is the name 'Mary' as the mother for Ann. There had been a Thomas Austin married to Mary MItchell in Angmering on 25 October 1738 and a son Thomas Austin baptised in Broadwater on 14 September 1739. But nowhere have I been able to find a burial for Mary Austin before 1746. Then strangely enough, Ann's sister Sarah Austin, baptised on 30 October 1748 is also noted as the daughter of Thomas and 'Mary'. So I think that we can safely presume that there's been a mistake and that both children are daughters of Thomas Lisher and Sarah Baker. Ann Austin married John Lisher on May 17, 1767 in St Mary's Church, Sompting. She gave birth to five children and died about 6 months after the birth of Elizabeth Lisher, the youngest. Noted in Sompting parish register on June 27 1780 was : "Ann Licia buried". Yet another variation of the Lisher name!
