Russel Austin was born on July 28, 1814 in Monroe, New York, United States, son of John Austin (1787–1859) and Rachael Ganyard (1795–1876).

Russel had a brother, Hiram Terry Austin (1810–1902).

Russel died on December 10, 1895 in Bucklin, Linn, Missouri, United States, aged 81.

Russel (18) married Osa Yount (16) (born about 1815 in Jefferson, Indiana, United States; daughter of Nicholas Yount and Elizabeth (Griffith) Yount) on December 20, 1832 in Fulton Co., Illinois, USA. Their daughter was Nancy Austin (1835–1928).
