Biography

This Jonathan Avery, b. Nov. 9, 1681 to James & Deborah (Stallyon) Avery, at Groton, CT. He was baptized March 29, 1682, First Church of New London.

Wheeler (1900) states that this particular Jonathan Avery (b. 1681) was the husband of Elizabeth Waterman. Wheeler was incorrect on that point. See The Groton Avery Clan (1912), p. 126-128 for verification of the spousal relationship of this person. This Jonathan Avery married, April 11, 1703, at Groton, Elizabeth Bill (daughter of Philip & Elizabeth (Lester) Bill of Groton. He was not the spouse of Elizabeth Waterman, thus Wheeler (1900) was incorrect as stated above. Elizabeth Waterman is herewith detached as a spouse from this profile.

Jonathan Avery was a farmer and trader; lived near the ferry in Groton and traded in horses to the West Indies. He was on the list of Groton freemen, 1708; and with his wife was in full communion with the First Church of Groton, Nov. 22, 1727. He had lot No. 15 in the assignment of lots on the cove. He died in Cuba, of yellow fever, about 1741.

This Jonathan Avery shows the same actual birth and death years(1681-1741) as the son of Hannah Miner Avery, b. 1655. Then his son (b. 1704) is shown as having the same birth year as the WikiTree profile of Hannah Avery (Miner), who died in 1692, so could not have had a son in 1704. WikiTree shows Deborah Stallyon Avery as the mother of the Jonathan Avery )b.1681). So one person is shown with two mothers.

This needs to be figured out.
