Biography

Lydia (Axtell/Maynard) Moore was daughter of Thomas Axtell and his wife, Mary (_____) Axtell, and the step-daughter of John Maynard who married Mary at Sudbury 16 Jun 1646 (after Thomas died in March of that year). NOTE: See Research Notes section; this has been disproven.

On 20 Jan 1668/9 John Maynard, husbandman, gave bond of 20 pounds for the appearance of "his daughter Lidiah" to answer to a charge of fornication with Joseph Moore.

On 26 Jan 1668/9, Joseph Moore confessed to fornication with Lydia Maynard and gave bond of 20 pounds for his appearance to answer the charge, with Jacob Moore (his brother) and Henry Rice as sureties.

On 28 Jan 1668/9, Joseph Moore was summoned to answer for fornication with Lydia Maynard.

Lydia married Joseph Moore between 28 Jan 1668/9 (when still single, charged with fornication with each other, and she was no doubt pregnant) and 14 Apr 1669 when their son Benoni was born (Sudbury vital records); she is most definitely married by 5 Oct 1669 by which time the records refer to her as "Lydia Maynard now Moore".

She died 23 NOV 1717 Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[1]

On 5 Oct 1669, petition by Elizabeth Moore, mother of Joseph, and Mary Maynard, mother of Lydia Maynard now Moore, seeking that the imposition of corporeal punishment for fornication on their children be relieved, and a fine imposed instead. The court minutes of the period are missing, so we do not know when the charge was first made, what exactly the penalty was, or whether the petition of the mothers was respected. [2]

Note

Name Lydia or Mary. The Sudbury Vital Records gives both names - Lydia and Mary, born on the same date, June 1, 1644, to Thomas Axtell and his wife Mary. In his will, John Maynard speaks of his daughter Lydia, wife of Joseph Moore. One author suggests that "as there is no record of any other Lydia in [John's] family, it seems probable that the daughter of his wife by her first husband,Thomas Axtell, is intended."[3] NOTE: See Research Notes section for further detals regarding this mistaken identity.

Research Notes

This materal was originally added to this bio in 2013, when Lydia's last name at birth was Maynard:

Confirmation that she was the daughter of John Maynard is found in his will, dated 4 Sep 1672, Sudbury, proved 1 Apr 1673, which names his wife Mary, sons John and Zechery, daughter Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Graves, daughter Mary (unmarried and under 21) and "my daughter Lidea wife of Joseph Moore, who was bequeathed 20 shillings in consideration of what he had given her at marriage. However, she was NOT the Lydia Maynard christened at Boston 26 Nov 1648, dau of John and Mary (Starr) Maynard from Duxbury.[4]

Lydia (Maynard) Moore was dau of John Maynard and his second wife, Mary (_____) Axtell, widow of Thomas; John and Mary were married at Sudbury 16 Jun 1646. Her birth year is estimated to be about 1651. She was not the daughter of Thomas Axtel of the same name.

Why Lydia, daughter of John Maynard, and is the Lydia who married Joseph Moore, as shown in her father's bio, shown as the daughter of Thomas Axtell (1619-1646)? The American Genealogist 60 (1984), page 54-55 states that she was John Maynard's daughter, and provides evidence as well. She was named in John's will as his daughter.

Is there a reliable source after 1984 that shows she was Axtell's daughter?
