John was born about 1754. He passed away before 1849. [1]
John Ayers and wife Nancy Cundiff had 3 daughters and 2 sons. He was licensed as the first local Methodist Minister in Bedford Co VA on 24 Oct 1789. This was only 5 years after the establishment of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States in Dec. 1784. [2]
Bishop Francis Asbury from New Jersey preached at the John Ayers' Chapel on John's farm in the summer of 1788 when he visited Bedford County, according to the Journal and Letters of Francis Asbury, Vol 1, page 575, edited by Dr. Elmer J. Clark in 1958. Ayers' Chapel closed around 1879 and the chapel became Ayers' School and survived until sometime in the 1930's. This Ayers' farm also contained a family cemetery of 1/8th acre according to the 24 Dec 1851 deed. [3]
