Biography

Hopestill Bobit (Babbitt) was born on 11 September, 1695, in Taunton, Bristol, Province of Massachusetts Bay, to parents Elkanah Babbitt and Elizabeth Briggs.[1]

  • 1717 Marriage Record: Hopestill Babbitt, age 22, married James Phillips, age 31, on January 31, 1717, in Dighton, Massachusetts Bay Colony. "January 31: 1717 James phillips married to hope bobet boath of Tanton." [2]
  • 1735 Father, Elkanah Babbit of Berkley, Massachusetts Bay Colony, executed his last will on December 2, 1735. He left his daughter, Hopestill Phillips forty shillings, to be paid after his wife's decease, and one fifth share of the residuum of his moveable estate after debts. He also appointed Hopestill's husband, James Phillips, and Gershom Crane of Berkley, to be overseers in all matters real and personal of his son Joseph Babbit.[3]
  • 1756 Hopestill's husband, James Phillips of Berkley, Massachusetts Bay Colony, executed his last will on May 15, 1756, witnessed by John Briggs Jr., Jacob Briggs Jr., and John Crane, leaving legacies to:[4]

  2. Son Ebenezer Phillips, (land incl. a tract bounded by my brother Nathaniel Phillips, John Briggs, Jr., and David Briggs, and share in old iron works of Taunton, now in Raynham)

Executor: son Ebenezer Phillips. The will was proved on 7 September 1756.[4]
