Biography

William Babcock was born in 1708 in Westerly, Rhode Island to John Babcock Jr. and Mary Champlin Babcock. [1][2]

He married Sarah Denison, daughter of Samuel Denison and Mary Lay Miner Denison[3], 11 August 1730, in Westerly, Rhode Island.[4] "William, of Westerly, and Sarah Denison, of Seabrook; by Rev. Hezekiah Marther, Aug. 11, 1730." The couple had 9 children (not all of whom reached adulthood)[5]:

  1. William Babcock, b. 19 May 1731; d. 6 Feb 1750
  2. Joshua Babcock, b. 2 Dec 1732
  3. Christopher Babcock, b. 12 Sep 1734
  4. Sarah Babcock, b. 17 Oct 1736; married George Irish [Note: The Babcock genealogy (published 1903) states that her husband was Robert Thompson; the Denison Genealogy (published 1963) states that she married George Irish]
  5. Elijah Babcock, b. 19 Jul 1738; d. 11 Dec 1738
  6. Elias Babcock, b. 28 Jul 1740
  7. Phineas Babcock, b. 28 Sep 1742
  8. Mercy Babcock, b. 14 Jul 1745
  9. Samuel Babcock, b. 4 Sep 1747


William died in 1751/2. [6]

His will is dated 4 January 1750/51 and proved on 4 February 1750/51 in Westerly, Rhode Island.[7] His inventory was taken on 29 January 1750/51.[7]
