Biography

Genevieve Babin, widow of Amand Hebert, is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 3-R. Listed with her are four of their children: Genevieve, Marie Josephe Hebert (1749-), Charles Hebert (1752-), and Marguerite Hebert.[1]

Genevieve Babin was born in Acadie, probably early in 1724. She was the daughter of René Babin and Isabelle Gautreau. She was baptized 10 January 1724 at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia, but no date of birth was given. Her godparents were Pierre Babin and Marguerite Gautreau.[2][3]

When she was 20, Genevieve married Amand Hebert, age 24, son of Jacques Hebert and Marguerite Landry, on 4 February 1744, at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia, the same church where she'd been baptized.[4][5][3]

Genevieve and Amand and family were exiled to Maryland during Le Grand Dérangement and were in the census of Acadians in Newtown, Maryland on 7 July 1763.[6]

They sailed from Baltimore, Province of Maryland to Louisiana, a journey that took 78 days including 17 days at Guarico and which cost two lives, including Amand Hebert's, and two children were born.[7]
