Biography

Marie Babineau was born about 1692 in Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Jean Babineau (abt. 1660–1741) and Marguerite Boudrot (abt. 1648–abt. 1718), based on her age in the 1693 census.[1]. Her parents had lived continuously in Port Royal so she was likely born there.

In 1693, at Port Royal, Marie, aged 1, was living with her parents, Jean BABINEAU, aged 33, and Marie [sic] BOUDROT, aged 44, widow of Francois BOURG. She was also living with her half-brother, Pierre BOURG, aged 10. The family owned 1 gun and was living on 25 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 15 sheep, and 20 pigs.[1]Living next door to her were her half-brother, Alexandre BOURG, aged 22, and her half-sister, Anne BOURG, aged 9.

Marie (18) married Claude Landry (20) (born about 1690 in Port Royal, Acadie; son of Claude Landry and Marguerite Thériot) on 23 Apr 1711 in Annapolis Royal, Acadie.[2][3] Their known children were:

  1. Marguerite Landry (1712–1712) .
  2. Claude Landry (1714–1757) .
  3. Pierre Landry (1717– ) .
  4. Brigitte Landry (1721–1757) .
  5. Francois Landry (1725–1773) .
  6. Marguerite Landry (abt. 1726–1790) .
  7. Marguerite Landry (1728– ) .
  8. Jean Landry (1735–1782)

Marie Babineau was listed as a passenger on board the Pembroke along with her husband Claude Landry. The history of the Acadians who escaped the 1755 Deportation by seizing the boat that transported them into exile has become legendary.[4]

She died on 20 November 1757, aged about 65 years, and was buried the next day at Quebec, Quebec, Canada.[5]
