Biography

Jone/Joanna Collens/Collins' birth and parentage are unknown. She was probably born England, about 1598 (assumes she was age 21 at marriage). Joan is presumed to have been closely related to widow Ellen Collens of St. John of Berestreet, Norwich. Ellen's will, dated 22 May 1639, mentions "my kinsman Roberte Tucke the sonne of Robt Tucke now or late of New England." She also mentions relations Robert Collins, Thomas Collins and Nicholas Collins.[1][2] See Research Notes. Joan/Joanna Tuck died at Hampton, Norfolk (old) County, Massachusetts Bay, 14 February 1673[/4].[3][4][5]

As Jone Collens, she married at St. Stephen, Norwich, 24 January 1618/9, Robert "Tooke" (Tuck).[6][7][8] He was baptized at All Saints, Norwich, Norfolk, England, 19 October 1596.[9][10][11] Robert Tuck died Hampton, Norfolk (old) County, Massachusetts Bay, 4 October 1664.[12] He was the son of Robert and Tamsin (_____) Tuck.[13]

On 5 January 1620/1, he was admitted "to the freedom of Norwich as a tailor."[14]

The last notice of the family at Norwich is the burial of son John at St. Stephen 4 October 1624. The family is next on record at London, where daughter Elizabeth was baptized 1628/9, and son Henry, buried, 1629.

Immigration

Robert Charles Anderson placed Robert Tuck's immigration to Watertown, Massachusetts Bay at 1636.[15] The family probably immigrated in the spring of that year.[16]

Life at New England

Robert Tuck was noticed of Watertown, Massachusetts Bay, 25 July 1636, when he was included in the second land division. He received further grants on 28 February 1636/7 and 26 June 1637.[17]

Robert Tuck was among those who petitioned for the Winnacunnet plantation (later Hampton, New Hampshire), granted by Massachusetts 6 September 1638.[18] The family presumably removed to Hampton about that time.

At Hampton, he maintained an inn and "tavern, was town clerk, and many times selectman."[19]

Probate. Administration of Robert Tuck's estate was granted 11 October 1664 to "'Johannah Tucke widow & John Samborn her son in law.'"[20] By order of the court 11 April 1665, control of the estate was granted to John Sanborn, "for the use of the widow during her life, and then be divided among the three chilldren, Robert Tuck, Elizabeth Sherburne, and Mary Sanborn, and the grandchild, John Tuck, son of Edward Tuck."[21]

The inventory of the estate of "widdow Joanna Tuck of Hampton" was presented by John Sanborn, administrator to the estate of Robert Tuck."[22]

"Inventory of ye goods of Robert Tuck of Hampton which were left by Johannah Tuck of Hampton at her decease Feb. 14, 1673. Amount L29, 11s. Appraised by Henry Dowe and Tho: Marston Feb. 26, 1673 ... The estate left by said Robert Tuck, deceased, was appraised at L214, 18s. (real, L204; personal, L10, 18s.). Had house, barn and land, including some marsh by Gouges wigwam. Debts due, L96.[23]

Collens/Collins Connections. Clifford L. Stott's 2019 research indicates Jone/Joanna may have been the sister-in-law of Ellen Collens whose will was dated 22 May 1639. In addition to her bequest to "kinsman" Tucke, Ellen's will mentions her "brother[-in-law]" Robert Collins of Norwich, glasier; "brother[-in-law]" Thomas Collins of Norwich, worsted weaver; also, "brother[-in-law]" Nicholas Collins of Barford, Suffolk. Ellen calls out her sister Ann, wife of Thomas Johnson, and a brother Thomas Selby. Stott writes, "Despite these clues, Jone's parents have yet to be identified in Norwich parish registers or probate registers."

Not daughter of Rev. Stephen Bachiler. He had no daughter by that name. See Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III, 3 vols. Assuming. there are no objections, I will update this profile a bit, including that I will make changes to incorporate information from Clifford L. Stott, "The English Ancestry of Robert^1 Tuck of Hampton, New Hampshire," The American Genealogist, 91 (2019):10-22.

Note that changes I plan to make include (1) update (if I can) her LNAB to Collins [or Collens]; (2) add a child list; (3) add research notes as to probable family associations.

Thank you for collaborating. --Gene

Edited to add: Please post if there is particular information you'd like to see included in this update.

Stott calls her Joan Collins, whose parentage is unknown. His finding is based on a "key piece of the puzzle"--the 22 May 1639 will of widow Ellen Collens of "the p[ar]ishe of St. John of Berestreet in the city of Norwich." The will includes a bequest to "my kinsman Roberte Tucke the sonne of Robt Tucke now or late of New England," to be paid when he reaches 24 years.

Based on this record, Stott then located a Norwich marriage at St. Stephen, 24 January 1618/9," for Robert Tooke and Jone Collens. Also located in that parish register was the baptism of their son Robert, 31 October 1619.

The Joanna who married Robert Tuck was NOT daughter of Rev. Stephen Bachiler. See RCA, GMB pp 62-63 for Stephen Bachiler's known children.
