Biography

Titus Overbeck Bachman was born March 24, 1852, in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, son of John Weaver Bachman and Ellevina Overbeck. His grandparents were Peter and Maria Magdalena Weaver Bachman, and John Henry and Maria Magdalena Kressler Overbeck. He was the middle of 3 sons, the brother of Peter Henry Bachman (who died young) and John Overbeck Bachman. On January 12, 1875, in Hellertown, Northampton County, he married Mary Jane Rentzheimer, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Ehrhart Rentzheimer. They were the parents of 3 children, two of whom lived to adulthood: Jacob Rentzheimer Bachman and John Rentzheimer Bachman. Tits passed away on April 26, 1940, in Hellertown, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and was buried on the 29th in Hellertown Union Cemetery there. Titus Overbeck Bachman was my great-great-grandfather.


From the Bethlehem Globe Times of March, 1940:

"TITUS BACHMAN TO BE 88 SUNDAY. One of Hellertown's Oldest Residents Is Ardent Hunter. Titus Bachman, one of Hellertown's oldest residents, who resides with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John T. (sic) Bachman, 96 Main St., Hellertown, Sunday will observe his 88th birthday anniversary at a dinner to be given in his honor at the home. Mr. Bachman, who is in excellent health, was born March 24, 1852, near Hellertown, son of the late John W. and Lovina Overbeck Martin (sic--should read Bachman). He was a farmer for many years and is now retired. He and Mary Jane Rentzheimer were married Jan. 12, 1875, by the late Rev. Tilghman O. Stem, pastor of Lower Saucon Reformed Church. She died Aug. 16, 1916. Despite his age, Mr. Bachman goes hunting every fall. During his life, he has never had any serious illness. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., No. 606, and the P.O.S. of A., No. 175, Hellertown, and Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Hellertown. Two of his three children are living, Jacob and John R. of Hellertown. There are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren."

"AGED HELLERTONIAN TO BE 88 ON SUNDAY. Titus O. Bachman Active Despite Years--Family Dinner Sunday. One of Hellertown's oldest residents, Titus O. Bachman, 96 Main Street, that borough, will pass another milestone in life's journey this coming Sunday when he celebrates his 88th birthday. Mr. Bachman, who resides with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Bachman, will be the guest of honor at a family dinner to be served Easter Sunday afternoon. Mr. Bachman, active despite his advanced years, was born March 24, 1852, near Hellertown, a son of the late John W. and Lovina (Overbeck) Bachman. He was a farmer for many years. On January 12, 1875, he was married to Mary Jane Rentzheimer, by the late Rev. Tilghman O. Stem, then pastor of the Lower Saucon Reformed Church. Mrs. Bachman died August 16, 1916. He is a member of Saucana Lodge, No. 606, I.O.O.F., and Washington Camp, No. 175, P.O.S. of A., both of Hellertown. He is an active participant in the affairs of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Hellertown. One of Mr. Bachman's prime interests is hunting and many times in the Fall of the year he may be seen trekking in fields around Hellertown. Two of his three children are still living, they are Jacob and John R. Bachman, of Hellertown. There are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren."

"BACHMAN--in Hellertown, April 26, 1940. Titus O. Bachman, aged 88 years, 1 month, 2 days. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service Monday, 2 p.m. from the late home, 96 Main Street, Hellertown. Burial in the Hellertown Union Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday evening."


Obituary for Titus O. Bachman from the Bethlehem Globe Times, Friday, April 26, 1940:

"TITUS O. BACHMAN, 88, PASSES AT HELLERTOWN. Active Participant in Community's Civic Life is Dead. Titus O. Bachman, one of Hellertown's oldest residents, for many years a well-known farmer and participant in civic affairs in that community, died at 10 a.m. today at his home, 96 Main Street. Mr. Bachman, who a short time ago was surrounded by members of his family on the occasion of his 88th birthday, fell down the cellar steps a few days ago. He sustained a leg injury and, it is thought, the shock was too much for his advanced age. He was born in Lower Saucon Township March 24, 1852, a son of the late John W. and Lovina (Overbeck) Bachman. in 1923, he retired from farming and took up residence in Hellertown. His wife, Mary J. Rentzheimer, died in 1916. He served at one time as a member of Hellertown Council and also for a short term presided over that body. He was a member of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Hellertown, and fraternally was affiliated with Saucana Lodge No. 606, I.O.O.F. and the P.O.S. of A., both of Hellertown. For a number of years he served as a director of the Saucon Valley Building and Loan Association and the Hellertown Cemetery Association. He is survived by two sons, John R. Bachman, who resided with his father at the Main Street address and who is a member of the Hellertown School Board; and Jacob Bachman, Hellertown. Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. from his late home, followed by interment in the Hellertown Union Cemetery."

"Titus O. Bachman, 88 years old, a prominent resident of Hellertown, died yesterday at his home. He was injured in a fall down a flight of cellar steps at his home a few days ago. Mr. Bachman served as a member of Hellertown Council and was for a short time president of the organization. He was a native of Lower Saucon Township, a son of the late John W. and Lovina Overbeck Bachman. For some time he was engaged in agriculture and retired in 1923. His wife, Mary J. Rentzheimer Bachman died in 1916. For some time he served as director of the Saucon Valley Building and Loan Association and the Hellertown Cemetery Association. He was a member of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Saucona Lodge, No. 606, I. O. O. F., and the P. O. S. of A. Surviving are two sons, John R., member of the school board; Jacob, both of Hellertown; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren."

"Titus O. Bachman. The funeral of Titus O. Bachman, who died at his home, 96 Main Street, Hellertown, last Friday morning, was held Monday afternoon. Services at the home were conducted by the Rev. Geroge B. Hamm. Interment was made in the Hellertown Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Howard A. Riegel, Titus A. Frey, Elmer Rosenberger, Herbert G. C. Hoffert, Stewart Barron and Stanley E. Bergstresser."
