Biography

"At Looneyville on Wednesday afternoon, December 31st, occurred the death of Mrs. Louis Schwartz. The health of the deceased had been failing for the past year, but no serious results were anticipated until Sunday previous to her death when she was stricken with cerebral apoplexy and from that time she never regained consciousness.

"The deceased was one of the pioneers of this section. She was born in Mackviller, Alsace, in 1833.

"She accompanied her parents, Peter and Anna Bachmann to this country when 14 years of age. In 1853 she was united in marriage to Louis Schwartz, and they settled on the present homestead, then largely covered with timber where they have resided continuously ever since.

"Mrs. Schwartz was a consistent and practical Catholic, being one of the foremost members of St. John's congregation at Alden Center since its formation over 55 years ago. She was ever ready to assist in furthering the interests of the charitable and spiritual work of the church. She is survived by her husband and five children, Mrs. J. A. Hoffmeyer of Buffalo, Louis Jr. of Batavia, Peter M. of Charlotte [near Rochester], Theresa M. and John A. of this place.

"The funeral was held at St. John's church on Saturday morning, Rev. Father Bonafeld officiating. Despite the inclement weather, a large concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors followed the remains to her last resting place, testifying to her many sterling virtues and the esteem in which she was held in the community in which she dwelt so many years."
