Biography

Karl Ludwig (Charles Louis) was the eldest surviving son of Karl Friedrich, Markgraf von Baden-Durlach, and his first wife, Karoline, Landgräfin von Hessen-Darmstadt, and was born at Karlsruhe, 14 February 1755. He was Hereditary Prince of Baden-Durlach from birth, and Hereditary Prince of Baden, once his father united Baden in 1771.[1]

He married at Karlsruhe, 15 July 1774, his first cousin, Amalie Friederike, Landgräfin von Hessen-Darmstadt. She was born at Prenzlau 20 June 1754, daughter of Ludwig IX, Landgraf von Hessen-Darmstadt.[1]

They had the following children;[1]; [2]

  1. Katharine Amalie Christiane Luise, born 13 July 1776 at Karlsruhe, twin with the following;
  2. Friederike Wilhelmine Caroline, born 13 July 1776 at Karlsruhe, twin with the preceding;
  3. Luise Marie Auguste, born 24 January 1779 at Karlsruhe;
  4. Friederike Dorothee Wilhelmine, born 12 March 1781 at Karlsruhe;
  5. Marie Elisabeth Wilhelmine, born 7 September 1782 at Karlsruhe;
  6. Karl Friedrich, born 13 September 1784 at Karlsruhe, died young 1 March 1785 at Karlsruhe;
  7. Karl Ludwig Friedrich, born 8 June 1786 at Karlsruhe, succeeded his father as Hereditary Prince of Baden, and his grandfather as Grand Duke of Baden in 1811;
  8. Wilhelmine Luise, born 10 September 1788 at Karlsruhe;
  9. Daughter (stillborn) 15 May 1791 at Karlsruhe.

Karl Ludwig, was apparently instrumental in making sure his elder daughters married well, and was visiting Friederike who had married the King of Sweden, when he was involved in a sleigh or sled accident on 15 December 1801. He suffered a contusion on his head and presumably was concussed and died the following morning.[1]

He was buried in the Riddarholmskyrkan in Stockholm, but his heart was buried separately in the Stifskirche St Michael at Pforzheim, Baden.[3]
