Biography

Harry J. Badman was born in Slocum Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania on 29 Oct 1918.[1] He was the son of Joseph Badman and Florence Arnold. At the time of the 1920 census he was 1 year old and lived in Slocum Township with his parents and older brother William.[2] In 1930 he lived in Slocum Township with his parents and three siblings. He was 11 and attending school.[3] In 1940 he lived in Slocum Township with his parents and six siblings. He worked as a laborer in the coal mines.[4]

While fishing in Mud Pond, Slocum Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania in 1932, Harry, William Badman, Howard Arnold, and three other friends found a canoe sunk in the shallow water. The boys tugged it out of the water, carried it to Howard's home in Folstown, and stored it in his garage, where it remained for about 30 years. In 1961 it was investigated by the Society for Preservation of Pennsylvania Archeology from Harrisburg and determined to be an Indian dugout canoe from about 1250 A.D. They donated the canoe to The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg where it is on permanent display.[5][6]

Harry served in the U.S. Army during World War II. At the time he enlisted he was working for the Glen Alden Coal Company at the Bliss Colliery.[7] He enlisted at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania on 22 May 1942 as a private and was honorably discharged on 31 Jan 1946 with the rank of staff sergeant.[8]

Harry began dating his brother's sister-in-law, Betty Seward after he was discharged from military service. He and Betty applied for a marriage license on 16 Mar 1946 at the Luzerne County Courthouse, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. They were married by Rev. Vernon Brooke Yeich on 23 Mar 1946 in Pond Hill, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.[9] The couple raised four daughters (still living in 2021) and one son, Ronald H. Badman. Harry died in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania on 23 Apr 2001[1] and is buried in Stairville Cemetery, Dorrance Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[10]
