Biography

According to the night of the 30th March 1851 Census Alexander Badman was lodging at 74 High Street in Somerset with James & Louisa Perham & their 3 children (John aged 15, Elizabeth aged 11 & William aged 6).

He was 23 years old and was an Agricultural Labourer.

Alexander emigrated to Australia on the "Reliance" arriving at Port Adelaide on 13th September, 1851. Alexander's future wife, Rachel Cox also travelled on the same voyage along with her sister Sarah. Alexander and Rachel married in 1853 in Mitcham, Adelaide.

He went to the Goldfields, where he did not make a fortune. His religion was Church of England. In 1854 his one and only child was born (Frank).

Alexander was a farmer and in 1855 Alexander and his brother Archibald leased 10 Acres in the Goodwood Road Area. In 1856 he received a land grant of 84 Acres. In 1860 he leased land in the Riverton area and in 1870 he was able to purchase this land and also another section.

"Mr Alexander Badman, who died at his residence, Gawler River, last week, was a very old colonist, having arrived in South Australia in 1851 in the ship Alliance. After a time he settled at Lower Light, where he was farming for four years. Then he removed to the Riverton district, where he remained upwards of thirty years. Four years ago he took up his abode on the Gawler River. The late gentleman had reached the age of 75 years. If he had lived until Sunday last he would have completed the jubilee year of his marriage. The wedding took place at the Mitcham Anglican church and was the second marriage ceremony in that building. There survive a widow and one son (Mr Frank Badman of Angle Yale), Mr Joel Badman of Adelaide, and Mr Archibald Badman, of Port Pirie, are brothers."

Alexander and Rachel are buried in the St Georges Anglican Cemeterey. Cheek Road South Australia.

Their grandaughter (Muriel Rachel Badman) who was born with down syndrome is also buried in the same plot.
