Biography

Salvatore Bagarella is born 28 January 1906 in Corleone and baptized two days later, named after his paternal grandfather. He is the son of Giuseppe Bagarella and Matilde Levante. His godfather is Matteo Macaluso, an unmarried man from Prizzi.[1]

Salvatore marries Lucia Mondello on 23 September 1928.[2]

Sources give different names for the children of Salvatore and Lucia, with most agreeing they have six, two boys and four girls: Giuseppe, Calogero (1935), Giovanna[3], Leoluca (1942), Matilda[4], Manuela[4], and the youngest, Antonietta (1944). Another sister named in the Wikipedia article is "Maria."

The children grow up in one of the tufa houses built around the square of the hospital. Nearby is the ivy covered church of Santa Rosalia. Above them is a path leading to the ice factory.[5]

Salvatore works in a mill with his childhood friend, Bernardo Provenzano.

From 1958 to 1963, Bagarella fights in the internal clan war against his former boss, Michele Navarra.

After Navarra is murdered on August 2, 1958, Bagarella becomes known as one of the most fearsome and ruthless killers in all of Sicily.

The assassins of the brothers Marco Marino and Giovanni Marino, and of Peter Maiuri, is said to be, though not formally, Bernardo Provenzano, Calogero Bagarella, and Giuseppe Ruffino, as well as Luciano Leggio. Carmelo lo Cascio reports being an eyewitness to Provenzano and Bagarella fleeing the scene of the killing of the three, on 6 September 1958.[6]

Salvatore is sent to confinement in Northern Italy from 1963 to 1968 for Mafia-related crimes.

Salvatore and two of his sons, Calogero and Leoluca, are defendants at the 1969 trial in Bari.[7]

According to unsourced Wikipedia entries, in 1972, his son Giuseppe is killed in prison.

In 1974, Salvatore's youngest daughter marries Toto Riina.
