Biography

Mehitable Bailey was born in 1709 at Bradford, MA, the daughter of James Bailey and Hannah Wood.[1]

She was married 30 July 1728 at Bradford, MA to John Goss.[2] They had eleven children born in the young East precinct of Bradford, MA:[3]

  1. James, bpt. 13 Jul. 1729; d. Dec. 1729
  2. Hannah, b. 6 Nov. 1730; d. 30 Mar. 1779 (unm.)
  3. Anna, b. 12 Oct. 1732; m. Moses Cross, 17 July 1753
  4. James, b. 12 Mar. 1735
  5. Peter, b.17 June 1737
  6. John, Jr., b. 8 Mar. 1739; m. Catherine Conant, 10 Feb. 1774; d. 26 Sep. 1821
  7. Daniel, b. 4 Sep. 1741
  8. Abigail, bpt. 7 Aug. 1743
  9. Martha, b. 11 July 1745
  10. Richard, b. 10 Mar. 1747, and
  11. Molly, b. 25 Mar. 1753.

This family lived in a house on Main street (East Bradford, later known as George Mitchell's house) that was likely built by John around the time of their marriage. Mehitable joined the East Bradford church on 7 Jan. 1728, as did husband John on 1 May 1743. On 22 Nov. 1762 they separated from this church when they moved for a time to the East Congregational Church of Haverhill.[4]

John and Mehitable later returned to East Bradford, where it is said John died about 1765 and Mehitable the year after. Mehitable was not mentioned in her father's will of 3 June 1765, but their daughter Hannah Goss was mentioned (being James' unmarried granddaughter).
